The Australian Olympic cycling team fell victim to a robbery in Brussels, Belgium, just days before the start of the Olympic Games. The team’s van was broken into overnight, resulting in the theft of some of their belongings.
In a social media video posted by team member Logan Martin, it was revealed that the right passenger window of the van had been smashed, and certain items were taken. Fortunately, most of the team’s possessions were safely stored in their room.
Police were called to investigate the incident, and with the help of bag tags, many of the stolen items were located and recovered. The team found their bags, tools, gloves, and massage table either on the ground or behind a park bench.
Despite the unfortunate event, Logan Martin expressed gratitude that his bikes were not in the van at the time of the robbery. He mentioned losing his wallet, backpack, and a few other items, but overall, the situation was not as severe as it could have been.
The Australian Olympic team’s chef de mission, Anna Meares, reassured that Logan’s bikes were unharmed, alleviating the stress of potentially losing vital sporting equipment so close to the competition.
Following the robbery incident, the team faced another challenge when an Australian woman was reportedly sexually assaulted in Paris. This led to a cautionary advisory from the Olympic team, urging athletes to avoid wearing their uniforms in public to enhance their safety.
Despite these setbacks, the team remained focused on their preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games, with high levels of security in place to ensure the safety of all athletes.
