The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the 77-year-old man who was found dead after a house explosion in Lake Zurich, Illinois as Timothy Toczylowski. He was a resident of the home where the explosion occurred on Tuesday evening.
First responders arrived at the scene to find the home completely leveled from the explosion that took place around 8:30 p.m. The man’s body was later recovered from the rubble, and he was identified through dental records.
Witness Tiffany Koch described hearing a loud boom and seeing the neighboring house on fire after the explosion. She mentioned that the sound was similar to a tree falling, but there was no significant shaking except for a quick second.
Authorities reported that two other homes suffered damage from the explosion. A utility company crew had to excavate gas lines to shut off natural gas to the property, allowing firefighters to extinguish the flames.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, according to the coroner’s office.
