A tragic incident occurred in Texas where a 1-year-old boy named Jiryiah Johnson was brutally attacked and killed by a pack of pit bulls. The incident took place when babysitter Heather Rodriguez, 36, left the baby with her 13-year-old daughter and the three dogs in their Converse home, as reported by Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
According to reports from News4SA, one of the pit bulls broke through a bedroom door and started attacking the baby, with the other two dogs joining in. The teenage girl tried to protect the baby in a harrowing tug-of-war situation.
Despite the teenager’s brave efforts to save the baby, the dogs managed to enter the bathroom where she had taken him. The teen eventually barricaded herself in another room and called for help, sustaining several bite wounds in the process.
Jiryiah suffered severe injuries to his neck and face and underwent emergency surgeries at a local hospital. Tragically, he passed away from his injuries later that day.
Rodriguez was arrested and charged with injury to a child with serious bodily harm by omission. The dogs involved in the attack were seized by authorities, despite Rodriguez’s objections.
Salazar commended the teenage girl for her heroic actions during the tragic incident. This was not the first time authorities had responded to Rodriguez’s residence regarding her dogs, as she had previously been cited for having them unleashed.
