The owner and founder of Barstool Sports encountered a frightening situation when he lost control of his boat off the coast of Massachusetts and had to be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
In a TikTok video, 47-year-old Dave Portnoy explained that the incident took place off Nantucket on a windy Monday after he accidentally unhooked his boat from buoys. The strong winds caused him to drift out to sea with a dead engine.
Fortunately, another boater noticed his distress and contacted the Coast Guard for help. The Coast Guard promptly arrived, towed his boat back to safety, and ensured his well-being. Grateful for the rescue, Mr. Portnoy expressed his appreciation for the Coast Guard’s swift response.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Portnoy shared on TikTok, “Captain Dave lives to tell another tale. Third time as captain, already lost at sea. It’s a dangerous game, the sea’s angry my friends.”
Despite his adventurous spirit, Mr. Portnoy hinted that he might take a break from boating for a while. He also used another social media platform, X, to thank the Coast Guard for their assistance.
The Coast Guard responded playfully, sending well wishes to Mr. Portnoy’s pit bull, Miss Peaches. Their interaction showcased a lighthearted moment amidst the seriousness of the rescue operation.
“Any time, Dave,” the Coast Guard replied with a pair of smiling emojis. “Tell Miss Peaches we love her.”
Mr. Portnoy established Barstool Sports in 2003 in the Boston area, and the sports and pop culture website has amassed over 16 million followers on Instagram.
