Small everyday items like plastic straws and pet-friendly rentals are taking the spotlight in the BC election campaign, alongside major platform items released by contenders.
One of the key promises from the Conservative Party of B.C. is the reintroduction of plastic straws, while the NDP is focusing on increasing pet-friendly rental options.

“It hasn’t achieved any significant environmental goals, but it has certainly made life worse for people. We will bring back plastic straws and cutlery, and eliminate the unnecessary bag fees that do little but add costs to everyday shopping,” Rustad emphasized.
The Conservatives aim to restore freedom of choice by allowing customers to select their preferred shopping bags, highlighting their commitment to reducing government overreach.
“By bringing back plastic straws, cutlery, and removing the bag fee, we will restore freedom of choice and focus on real solutions for our environment,” Rustad added.
The NDP’s 65-page platform, if re-elected, includes plans for more pet-friendly rental options.
“This move will also bring down the rate of pet abandonments across the province, as renters no longer have to make the difficult choice between the housing they need and the pet they love,” the policy states.
Other NDP promises include free transit for seniors during non-peak hours, extensive tree planting initiatives, and a ban on employers’ request for doctor’s notes.
The NDP also plans to expand campsites for recreational opportunities and increase funding for kids’ amateur sports programs.
