As President Joe Biden’s campaign faces criticism over his debate performance, Democrats in Congress are becoming more frustrated with those around him and concerned about his re-election chances, as well as their own prospects of winning House and Senate majorities.
Discussions about changing strategy are already happening, with some Democratic lawmakers and wealthy donors planning how to secure a congressional check on a potential second term for Donald Trump if Biden remains in the race.
There is a growing sense of despair and frustration within the party, particularly among swing-district Democrats who are crucial for a majority. Some donors are urging lawmakers to publicly call for a new candidate, while others believe that continuing to support Biden is prolonging the inevitable.
Many Democrats blame Biden and his family for not being transparent about his condition, with some feeling deceived after defending him on the campaign trail. There are calls for Biden to step down gracefully if polling shows significant internal issues, in order to save democracy.
Republicans are preparing to attack Democrats for enabling a perceived weak president, with plans to highlight past statements downplaying concerns about Biden’s fitness for office. The NRCC is aiming to capitalize on Biden’s perceived political collapse to expand the House Republican majority.
Despite the challenges, Democrats believe in the strength of their candidates and their ability to deliver results. While Biden may currently be a liability, there is hope that the situation can change as the election approaches.
