President Biden addressed the nation’s largest gun-control group on Tuesday, highlighting his efforts to enact reforms on firearms safety while acknowledging that he had not achieved all of his priorities. He criticized former President Donald J. Trump for not taking sufficient action to reduce gun violence during his term in office.
During his speech at the annual training conference for Everytown for Gun Safety in Washington, Mr. Biden emphasized the need for measures such as a ban on assault weapons, an end to legal immunity for gun manufacturers, and universal background checks.
The President’s remarks came shortly after his son Hunter Biden was convicted of three felony counts of lying on a federal firearms application in 2018. While Mr. Biden stated that he would respect the judicial process and support his son, he did not address the conviction during his speech.
Mr. Biden has been a strong advocate for gun reform, signing a bipartisan gun bill in response to a mass shooting in Texas. He emphasized the importance of taking concrete actions to address gun violence rather than offering thoughts and prayers alone.
