Iran has made a vow to punish Israel for the airstrike in Syria and the killing of Quds Force commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi.
New worries about a potential Iranian strike arise despite the Biden administration’s efforts to distance itself from the Israeli attack, emphasizing that they had no prior knowledge of the operation.
NSC spokesperson retired Adm. John Kirby stated on Monday that the U.S. was not involved in any way in the Damascus strike. However, Iran has warned that any U.S. involvement in defending Israel would make the U.S. a target as well in the event of a retaliatory strike.
The Biden administration expressed concerns about engaging in official dialogue with Tehran, given the lack of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, Republican senators accused the administration of pursuing a strategy of appeasement with Iran.
Despite ongoing military actions in the region, the Biden administration maintains that the conflict remains contained within Israel. However, there have been numerous attacks and responses involving various countries and groups in the Middle East.
