President Biden emphasized the importance of resilient, diverse, and secure supply chains for the United States. He took action on June 14 by signing an executive order directing the federal government to strengthen the U.S. supply chain. This order formalizes the White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience, which will coordinate efforts to enhance long-term supply chain resilience and American industrial competitiveness.
The council, co-chaired by the assistant to the president for national security affairs and the assistant to the president for economic policy, includes over 30 members from various government agencies. President Biden highlighted the need for government actions to enhance manufacturing capacity, encourage innovation, fight climate change, and improve national emergency preparedness.
The council is tasked with recommending best practices for agency coordination, identifying federal resources to support supply chain resilience, and ensuring fair and competitive marketplace operations that empower workers. It will also make recommendations on federal incentives, trade reforms, education, and workforce reforms.
Furthermore, the council may consult with stakeholders such as private industry, educational institutions, labor unions, and state governments. President Biden’s executive order aligns with the G7’s emphasis on supply chain resiliency and reliability both domestically and globally. The G7 leaders underscored the importance of transparency, diversification, security, sustainability, trustworthiness, and reliability in supply chains, encouraging coordinated efforts between the public and private sectors to strengthen them.
