During their phone call, Biden emphasized the need to secure a cease-fire and hostage release deal with Hamas at the upcoming talks in Cairo. Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization, is being represented by Qatar through proxy as they control Gaza and have not participated in the negotiations directly. Israel, Egypt, the United States, and Qatar will be mediating the discussions.
Vice President Kamala Harris also joined the call, although specific details of her involvement were not disclosed. The White House spokesperson confirmed the discussion about the cease-fire and hostage release deal, as well as diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.
Cease-fire negotiations have faced challenges, particularly regarding the presence of Israeli troops in southern Gaza. Hamas demands a full withdrawal of IDF troops, while Israel is concerned about the potential resurgence of Hamas if troops are pulled out completely. Netanyahu’s office has reiterated Israel’s commitment to ensuring that Hamas does not pose a threat to Israeli security.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel recently to present a “bridging proposal” aimed at resolving disagreements between Israel and Hamas. However, his trip concluded without a definitive cease-fire agreement.
During their conversation, Netanyahu and Biden also discussed the United States’ ongoing support for Israel’s defense against threats from Iran, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen. Recent clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have heightened tensions in the region, with significant attacks exchanged between the two sides.
The conflict in the Middle East escalated when Hamas attacked Israel, resulting in numerous casualties. The fighting has taken a toll on both sides, with a significant loss of life reported in Gaza.
