President Biden reassured a group of Democratic governors that he is committed to running in the 2024 campaign, following questions about the path forward after his disappointing debate performance last week.
After the meeting, several governors expressed their support for President Biden. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York stated, “President Joe Biden is in it to win it, and all of us pledged our support to him.”
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, emphasized the importance of ensuring victory in November, with the governors united in their support for the president.
Governor Wes Moore of Maryland, Governor Gavin Newsom of California, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan also voiced their support for President Biden.
The meeting concluded with Vice President Kamala Harris highlighting the threats a victory by former President Donald J. Trump could pose to democracy.
However, Governor Hochul’s statement about pledging support to Mr. Biden raised concerns among some attendees. Several governors expressed doubts about his ability to secure a win in November.
Governor Janet Mills of Maine and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico raised concerns about Mr. Biden’s candidacy, while Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut highlighted the need to make a strong case to voters.
The meeting, organized by Governor Walz, came together swiftly after the governors met privately to discuss their concerns and seek clarity about the campaign’s direction.
The governors, who have been strong supporters of President Biden, are deeply concerned about the possibility of a second Trump administration. They have been seeking answers and reassurance about the president’s commitment to the race.
Governor Josh Green of Hawaii, who participated in the meeting virtually, shared that President Biden acknowledged feeling exhausted during the debate but affirmed his determination to continue. Dr. Green praised the president’s clarity and focus during the meeting.
He also emphasized the importance of showcasing President Biden’s capabilities in person and on TV to convince the public of his readiness for the role.
