President Biden is set to visit Wisconsin on Wednesday to announce the establishment of an artificial intelligence data center, showcasing a major economic achievement in a key battleground state and underscoring a significant shortcoming by his predecessor and potential 2024 opponent.
At a technical college in Racine, the President will reveal that Microsoft is investing $3.3 billion to construct the center, which is expected to generate 2,300 union construction jobs and 2,000 permanent positions, according to the White House. This initiative is part of President Biden’s “Investing in America” agenda, which aims to attract billions of private-sector investments in industries like manufacturing, clean energy, and artificial intelligence.
During his fourth visit to Wisconsin this year, President Biden will continue to draw a contrast between his administration and former President Donald J. Trump. The current President will also engage with Black voters about the significance of the upcoming election at a campaign event during his visit.
The White House emphasized that President Biden’s trip to Racine highlights his commitment to investing in communities that were neglected or harmed by the previous administration’s policies.
The Microsoft data center will be constructed on the site where President Trump announced in 2017 that Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, would build a $10 billion factory. However, the Foxconn project failed to materialize as promised, resulting in a fraction of the expected jobs and disappointing the local community.
In contrast, Microsoft’s investment in Racine is anticipated to create thousands of jobs and contribute to the revitalization of the area. The company’s commitment to workforce development, including partnering with Gateway Technical College to establish a “Datacenter Academy” and expanding its “Girls in STEM” program, demonstrates its dedication to fostering innovation and technology in Wisconsin.
