During his tour of Pennsylvania, President Biden’s campaign will launch a new advertisement highlighting his support for organized labor and criticizing the economic policies of former President Donald J. Trump.
The ad showcases JoJo Burgess, a steelworker and the mayor of Washington, Pa., a small town located southwest of Pittsburgh. President Biden is set to address the United Steelworkers union in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, where he is expected to call for an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum products from China by his trade representative.
“Donald Trump has demonstrated through his past actions that he does not value workers,” stated Mr. Burgess in the minute-long ad. “Currently, we have the most pro-American worker president in office that we’ve ever had in our history.”
The Biden campaign disclosed that it is investing in the “mid-six figures” to disseminate the message through television and digital platforms in Pennsylvania. This is separate from a $30 million ad campaign across major battleground states. The campaign aims for the ad to complement media coverage of President Biden’s three-day visit to Pennsylvania, concluding in Philadelphia on Thursday. Winning the state, where he narrowly defeated Mr. Trump in 2020, is crucial to his re-election strategy.
The new ad reinforces Mr. Biden’s stance against Mr. Trump on the economy, accusing the former president of favoring billionaires over workers. In a speech outlining his tax policy in Scranton, his hometown, President Biden criticized Mr. Trump.
“He learned the best way to get rich is to inherit it,” remarked Mr. Biden about his rival.
Mr. Burgess, a Democrat, was a guest of President Biden’s at the State of the Union address in 2022. He was elected as the first Black mayor of Washington, Pa., last year. The Biden campaign stated that the ad featuring Mr. Burgess would air during news programs and regional sports networks.
The campaign also unveiled a shorter ad featuring Mr. Burgess for digital platforms. In this ad, Mr. Burgess defends President Biden against criticisms from Mr. Trump and other Republicans regarding his age and mental acuity.
“When you meet him, this guy is as sharp as a knife,” praised Mr. Burgess about the president. “They have nothing else to attack because they can’t criticize the positive changes he is making for this country.”
