Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Faces Criticism for Sanctuary City Stance
Boston’s Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu is facing backlash from local leaders for her firm stance on liberal sanctuary city laws, declaring that “we stand with immigrants.”
Wu has previously stated that Boston will not cooperate with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, a position she reiterated during her recent State of the City address.
During her speech, Wu emphasized, “No one tells Boston how to take care of our own, not kings, and not presidents who think they are kings. Boston was born facing down bullies.”
“You belong here,” she reassured immigrants in her address.
Wu’s unwavering support for sanctuary city policies has angered conservative local leaders who oppose shielding illegal immigrants from ICE, citing concerns about the safety of Bostonians.
Massachusetts GOP spokesperson Logan Trupiano expressed his disapproval, stating, “There is simply no justifiable reason for her to stand in the way of this critical progress.”
Trupiano added, “The city’s sanctuary policies have led to the release of dangerous individuals back into our communities, undermining public trust and security.”
He also highlighted a surge in arrests of illegal immigrant criminals in the area, including child sex predators.
Former immigration judge and Center for Immigration Studies policy expert Andrew Arthur warned that Wu’s policies could jeopardize the safety of citizens and migrant communities she aims to protect.
Arthur emphasized that sanctuary policies could harm immigrant communities by creating a safe haven for criminals, discouraging individuals from reporting crimes due to fear of retaliation.
Despite the criticism, Mayor Wu remains steadfast in her commitment to maintaining Boston’s status as a sanctuary city for immigrants.
