Talking and listening to each other from across the political spectrum requires bravery and stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
At a meeting of the Sonoma County Chapter of “Braver Angels” at the Heartwood Church in Rohnert Park, California, individuals from various political backgrounds came together to discuss their differences in a respectful and open-minded manner. The organization, founded in 2016, aims to bridge the gap between Republicans and Democrats by focusing on shared values and aspirations.
Despite the current polarization in our nation, there is a growing need for unity and understanding. The meeting highlighted the importance of coming together, regardless of political affiliation, to work towards a better future for all. Through open dialogue and respectful communication, individuals can find common ground and build relationships based on mutual respect.
The success of “Braver Angels” in fostering constructive conversations and creating a safe space for dialogue demonstrates the potential for positive change in our society. By continuing to engage in discussions and working together on key issues, individuals can make a meaningful impact on their communities and the nation as a whole. We must continue attending and inviting others to join us to foster the same sense of “crossing the bridge of the great divide” that we encountered. The name “Braver Angels” was inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s use of the phrase “Better Angels” in his first Inaugural Address. Despite the name change due to trademark issues in 2020, the essence remains the same as Lincoln intended. In times of division, Lincoln reminds us to listen to the “better angels of our nature” and strive for unity and friendship rather than enmity. The name “Braver Angels” signifies the courage it takes to reach out to those with differing political views and work towards reuniting our divided nation. The experience at the Sonoma Braver Angels’ meeting on July 11 exemplified the positive impact of stepping out of our comfort zones and engaging with others across the political spectrum.
