EL SEGUNDO, Calif.—Even though the 19-year-old son of LeBron James has been drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, Bronny is confident in handling the extra attention and pressure as the James family makes basketball history.
“I’m … trying to get my name out for myself,” Bronny said during a press conference on Tuesday. “I just want to come in, work hard, and improve every day. Playing with my dad wasn’t my main focus, but it’s definitely a unique opportunity.”
The Lakers officially introduced Bronny James and their first-round pick, Dalton Knecht, at their training complex. By selecting Bronny with the 55th overall pick, the Lakers have created the potential for an unprecedented NBA father-son duo.
“The added pressure is definitely there,” Bronny James acknowledged. “I’ve seen the media speculation and doubts about my abilities, but I’ve faced challenges all my life. This is just another hurdle to overcome.”
Bronny clarified that his decision to enter the NBA wasn’t solely because of his father’s career, and he knew he couldn’t control where he was drafted. Despite social media chatter, he is focused on proving himself on the court.
Bronny James is the eldest son of LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. LeBron, who has been with the Lakers for six seasons, is expected to continue with the team despite being a free agent.
LeBron James observed his son’s press conference from the back of the Lakers’ gym at the training complex.
Bronny credited his father’s advice for helping him prepare for the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of hard work, coachability, and discipline.
After a brief college stint, Bronny is eager to showcase his skills in the NBA, confident in his ability to rise to the occasion.
Instead of returning to college, Bronny plans to develop his game within the Lakers’ player-development system under new Coach JJ Redick’s guidance.
Both Bronny James and Knecht are set to participate in the Lakers’ summer league games in Sacramento and Las Vegas.
LeBron and Bronny James are poised to join a select group of father-son duos who have played together in professional North American sports, a testament to their shared passion for the game.
