Several Democratic governors have made similar announcements this week, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom declared on Thursday that he is urging state lawmakers to convene a special session later this year in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s recent victory. The special session will focus on protecting California’s progressive policies regarding climate change, abortion, and illegal immigration.
This decision comes shortly after Trump’s re-election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, also a Democrat from California. Trump’s campaign platform included proposals to deregulate industries, conduct mass deportations of illegal immigrants, impose tariffs, and more.
In a statement, Newsom emphasized, “The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack, and we won’t sit idle. California has faced this challenge before, and we are prepared to respond. We will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”
The governor’s office outlined abortion, immigrant protection, the climate crisis, and LGBT issues as key areas that the special session will address. Newsom has previously positioned California as a sanctuary for individuals from other states seeking abortions, passing laws to enhance abortion access and providing funding for out-of-state patients seeking abortions in California.
California has also taken significant steps toward environmental sustainability, mandating that all new vehicles sold in the state be electric, hydrogen-powered, or plug-in hybrids by 2035. Additionally, the state offers state-funded health care to all low-income residents, regardless of their immigration status.
Attorney General Rob Bonta affirmed California’s commitment to progress, stating, “No matter what the incoming Administration has in store, California will keep moving forward. We stand ready to defend your rights and protect California values.”
Following Trump’s re-election, Newsom expressed disappointment in a statement but vowed to continue the fight for freedom and opportunity. The governors of other Democrat-controlled states, such as Massachusetts, Illinois, and New York, also announced plans for special actions in response to Trump’s victory.
Despite the special session, recent election results show a shift in voting trends in California, with Trump gaining more support compared to the previous election. This trend was also observed in other traditionally Democratic states like Illinois, New York, and New Jersey.
Overall, the response from Democratic governors indicates a unified effort to protect progressive policies and values in the face of potential challenges from the incoming administration.
