Democratic leaders express gratitude to President Biden for his service and some show support for Vice President Harris to lead the ticket.
After serving as a campaign advocate for President Biden this year, Governor Gavin Newsom praised the president’s leadership in light of the news.
“With our democracy and future in jeopardy, no one is better suited to challenge former President Donald Trump than Ms. Harris,” Mr. Newsom wrote.
Shortly after President Biden’s endorsement, Ms. Harris, a California politician who previously served as San Francisco district attorney and the state’s attorney general before being elected to the U.S. Senate, released a statement on X expressing her gratitude.

“My goal is to earn and secure this nomination,” Ms. Harris stated. “I have spent the past year traveling across the nation, discussing with Americans the crucial choice in this significant election. And that is what I will continue to do in the coming days and weeks.
In a later statement, she pledged to “do everything in my capacity to bring together the Democratic Party—and the nation—to defeat Donald Trump.”
While many members of the Democratic Party are endorsing Ms. Harris for the position, the nomination process is not yet finalized. It remains to be seen if other potential candidates will enter the race.
The Democratic National Convention is set for August 19–22 in Chicago, where the nominee is expected to be confirmed.
Former House Speaker and current Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed “love and appreciation” for the president.
In her remarks, Ms. Pelosi did not make any endorsements or discuss potential campaigns to replace the president.
A congressman who previously called for President Biden to step down due to concerns about his age and fitness, praised the president.
He also gave his full endorsement to the vice president.
“Now is the time for all of us to rally behind Vice President Harris,” Mr. Schiff stated. “I have worked with her as our attorney general, senator, and vice president, and I look forward to working with her as president.”
U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) thanked the president for delivering “transformative bipartisan victories” and reinstating “America’s leadership on the global stage.”
In another statement, the senator endorsed Ms. Harris for the top position on the ticket.
Appointed by Mr. Newsom last year to fill the seat left by the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Laphonza Butler acknowledged the president for his decision.
She urged Democrats to support Ms. Harris to uphold the administration’s agenda.
“The progress made is still at risk, and we must now do all we can to ensure Vice President Harris succeeds,” Ms. Butler stated. “There is no one better equipped for this challenge.”
Representative Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) described herself as one of President Biden’s “most ardent supporters” and offered her “full backing” to the vice president.
“I was prepared to stand by you [President Biden] through the Democratic Party nomination,” Ms. Waters expressed. “However, you have chosen to step down … You are a compassionate and honorable man who is willing to make sacrifices for what you believe is best for the country.”
A state lawmaker acknowledged that the president has “ushered in significant change” and overseen a flourishing stock market.
In a separate post, Mr. Rivas voiced his support for Vice President Harris to be the Democratic nominee for president, emphasizing her fearless leadership as essential for overcoming challenges and preserving democracy. However, Assemblyman James Gallagher raised concerns about the process, questioning the undemocratic nature of not letting voters decide and expressing dissatisfaction with current policies.
Local leaders also weighed in on the President’s decision, with Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg praising President Biden’s character and highlighting his historic achievements. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass endorsed Vice President Harris, applauding her strength, courage, and compassion in leading initiatives to improve the city.
The Los Angeles County Republican Party criticized the Democratic Party’s nominee selection process, emphasizing their stance on the matter.
