An award-winning California teacher admits to sexually abusing students
A California teacher, Jacqueline Ma, who was recently named “Teacher of the Year” in San Diego County, broke down in tears in court as she confessed to sexually abusing two of her students, ages 11 and 12. The abuse took place at Lincoln Acres Elementary School in National City.
Ma faced a potential 180-year sentence but accepted a plea deal that could result in a 30-year to life sentence. She pleaded guilty to lewd acts with her students and possessing material containing a minor engaged in sexual conduct, as she sent explicit images to the boys and requested inappropriate photos from them.
During the court hearing, Ma tearfully admitted her guilt to the judge. The Deputy District Attorney emphasized the seriousness of the case and the breach of trust by Ma, stating that the plea deal sends a strong message to the community about the consequences of such actions.
Ma, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher, was arrested on campus after a parent reported her inappropriate behavior towards a 12-year-old student. The investigation revealed that she had been grooming the boy for several months, exchanging explicit messages and photos with him.
Additional evidence showed that Ma had similar inappropriate interactions with an 11-year-old student. The sentencing for Ma is scheduled for May 9, following her admission of guilt in court.
Throughout the proceedings, it was evident that Ma had taken advantage of her position of trust and authority to engage in despicable acts with vulnerable children. The court acknowledged the gravity of the offenses and the impact on the victims.
Despite her previous accolades as an outstanding teacher, Ma’s actions have tarnished her reputation and led to severe legal consequences. The sentencing will ultimately determine the extent of her punishment for the harm she caused to her students.
It is a sobering reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and holding individuals accountable for their crimes, especially when they involve the exploitation of minors by those in positions of authority.
