Individuals in California can now add their driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet on their iPhones and Apple Watches, as announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 19. This initiative is part of the state’s mobile driver’s license pilot program, which currently accommodates up to 1.5 million participants. Google Wallet also received the same update last month.
“While individuals still need to carry a physical card while driving, the digital ID can be utilized at TSA checkpoints in airports like San Francisco International, Los Angeles International, and San Jose Mineta International, as well as at specific businesses and venues to verify age or identity,” Newsom stated.
Moreover, Californians can utilize this feature at Apple Store locations across the U.S. for order pickups and Genius Bar appointments. In the near future, apps such as CLEAR, MyChart, and Uber Eats will also integrate with this feature.
By adding their ID to Apple Wallet, users can present it by holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader or opening the Wallet app with a double-click of the side button and selecting the ID. The data shared during transactions is minimal, and users have the opportunity to review and authorize the information before transmission. No unlocking, displaying, or handing over of the device is necessary to present the ID.
