After reviewing the employment figures, one analyst noted that state voters made a wise decision in rejecting a minimum wage increase during the November election.
In October, California’s unemployment rate rose to 5.4 percent, the highest since the pandemic began, as reported by the state Employment Development Department. Job numbers in technology, manufacturing, and construction declined over the past year, while sectors such as health care, finance, transportation, hospitality, government, and professional services saw an increase in jobs.
With over 1.05 million Californians unemployed in October, an increase of more than 13,000 from September and 54,500 since October 2023, the state is facing economic challenges. The unemployment rate peaked at 16.1 percent in April 2020, dropped to 3.8 percent in August 2023, and has been rising once again.
Experts predict a prolonged slowdown in the job market as private-sector job growth remains stagnant. Given the current state of affairs, rejecting the proposed minimum wage hike to $18 was seen as a prudent choice by the majority of voters on Nov. 5, according to political analyst Marc Joffe from the Cato Institute.
California’s economy has been experiencing a slowdown for the past two years, with job growth limited to government and health care sectors. The state is projected to face double-digit operating deficits in the coming years, with high spending growth forecasted in the latest fiscal outlook.
Despite challenges in the private sector, consumer spending has been declining throughout 2024. The job market has been particularly tough on younger workers, with those aged 20 to 24 experiencing higher unemployment rates compared to pre-pandemic levels.
However, there has been growth in health care, educational services, and other service sectors like home and auto services, which have helped sustain California’s job market. Government-related jobs in transportation have seen the most growth this year, outpacing all other sectors.
Overall, the employment landscape in California reflects a complex and evolving situation that requires careful consideration and strategic decision-making to navigate successfully.
