The Canadian military has announced that a soldier is presumed dead after being caught in an avalanche while on leave in Switzerland.
According to a statement from the Armed Forces, Capt. Sean Thomas went missing in the avalanche on April 1.
Local authorities had reported that three individuals were killed in an off-piste area of the Riffelberg, located above the resort and below the renowned Matterhorn peak.
The military disclosed that Capt. Thomas had joined the Armed Forces in 2018 and had been deployed to Jordan as part of the Canadian Training Assistance Team last November. He was scheduled to return home next month.
At the time of the avalanche, no other members of the Canadian Armed Forces were in the vicinity.
