Democratic challenger Derek Tran has taken the lead over Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in the 45th Congressional District race in California. Tran, a consumer rights attorney and co-owner of a pharmacy with his wife Michelle, is currently ahead by 36 votes, with both candidates tied at 50 percent. While Tran is trailing in the Orange County portion of the district, he leads in the Los Angeles County portion.
Previously unprocessed ballots in Orange County were counted on Saturday, and no further counting is scheduled for Sunday in either Orange County or Los Angeles County. The counting is set to resume on Monday. Tran has made significant progress in closing the gap with Steel, as he trailed by 11,363 votes initially and has steadily narrowed the margin since then.
It is unclear how many more ballots need to be counted in order to determine the final outcome of the race.
