In a recent article published in the Defense Post, E.G. “Buck” Shuler, former commander of the United States Strategic Air Command’s 8th Air Force, sounds the alarm about new EPA tailpipe emissions regulations that aim to phase out gas-powered cars in favor of electric vehicles (EVs), putting the United States at the mercy of China.
Retired Lt. Gen Schuler’s concerns are valid. China holds significant control over the materials necessary to produce EVs and dominates the global market for solar panels, which are being promoted as a key renewable energy source to power EVs with questionable environmental benefits.

China’s strategic investments in the EV sector have made it a global leader, capitalizing on Western attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
President Biden’s executive order mandating that 50% of all cars sold by 2030 be electric vehicles plays into China’s hands, according to critics.
Critics argue that these mandates are unrealistic and economically damaging, benefiting China’s economy at the expense of the United States. The push towards EVs seems more ideological than scientific.
