In its early days, the Hillcrest & Wahtoke Railroad and Christmas tree farm started as a 1,200-foot loop on 5 acres in Reedley, California. Over the years, the farm has expanded to 45 acres, and the track now stretches to nearly 3 miles.
Owned by Sean and Melissa Bautista since 1992, the farm has become a beloved attraction in the area. The couple’s dream of operating a miniature railroad came to life with the help of the late Erich Thomsen, a train expert and mechanical engineer.
Since opening to the public in 1994, the railroad has continued to grow and evolve. Today, visitors can enjoy train rides during the Christmas season, pumpkin season in the fall, and blossom season in March. The farm also offers other attractions such as miniature golf, a treehouse, and food vendors on open weekends.
Aside from its popularity as a tourist destination, Hillcrest Farms is also known for its mechanical expertise. Sean Bautista and his team have restored Disneyland locomotives and even helped create track switches for the park in Anaheim.
From building trains to laying track, Bautista’s background as a pilot for the Air National Guard and United Airlines has led to unique opportunities, such as serving as a technical advisor for Disney films like “Planes” and “Planes: Fire & Rescue.”
With new additions like an extended train ride and the longest 15-inch gauge railroad bridge in North America, Hillcrest Farms continues to surprise and delight visitors. The farm now boasts three locomotives, an engine house, and a turntable for storing engines, making it a versatile venue for events like weddings.
As Bautista puts it, Hillcrest is not just a farm and a railroad—it’s a creative hub that showcases the ingenuity and passion of its owners and employees, making it a unique and special destination in Reedley and beyond.
