A TikTok influencer who was severely injured after a hit-and-run accident that killed her roommate two months ago has defied the odds and is now able to mouth words for the first time since the tragic crash.
Camryn Herriage, a 23-year-old Texas Tech graduate, had been on a ventilator since Feb. 11 after the car she was in with her roommate and friends was struck by a pickup truck at a red light.
The driver of the pickup, 27-year-old Carmen Guerrero, was arrested for driving at 70 mph in a 35-mph zone while under the influence of alcohol.
Despite her severe injuries, Herriage has surpassed the 2% chance of survival predicted by doctors and is making remarkable progress in her recovery, as reported by her family.
Herriage’s father, Tim, shared an update on Facebook on Sunday about her incredible progress, including her ability to speak for the first time.
“Today, I spent time with Camryn, and I’m pleased to report that she’s doing well,” said Tim, Herriage’s father, updating on Sunday about his daughter’s progress, which includes her speaking for the first time.
“Her eyes are following movements, and she enjoys watching friends and Disney movies, indicating signs of engagement with her surroundings,” he stated.
“She was even able to grasp a ball, hold it, and drop it on command multiple times, showing progress in her physical abilities,” Tim added.
“Camryn is actively working on retraining herself physically, displaying determination and resilience in her recovery journey. She is mentally and cognitively aware, mouthing words like ‘hi,’ and demonstrating conscious control of her bodily functions,” her father continued.
However, he mentioned that she is still experiencing pain from her injuries.
“We understand that Camryn’s recovery will require ongoing physical, speech, and other therapies. While we acknowledge that there is still a long road ahead, we remain optimistic about her continued progress,” Tim wrote, adding that “we’re not completely out of the woods yet.”
The family hopes that Herriage will fully regain her ability to speak.
“Your love and support have been invaluable during this challenging time, and we appreciate every act of kindness and encouragement,” he added.
According to her LinkedIn account, Herriage works at the social media management and branding company Wundertre in Lubbock, Texas.
Her roommate, Sara House, 22, tragically lost her life in the crash, while several other friends were injured.
House often appeared in videos on Herriage’s TikTok page, which has garnered over 32,000 followers.
A GoFundMe page set up for House described her as a “bright spirit” with “infectious laughter” who “brought light into every room she entered.”
Guerrero is facing multiple charges, including manslaughter, a collision resulting in death, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She is currently in custody at the Dallas County jail.
If convicted, she could face up to 50 years in prison.
