House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) is demanding Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm to testify before the House committee after several unsuccessful attempts to secure her testimony. Mr. Comer expressed frustration after Ms. Granholm appeared on “The View” without honoring earlier requests to testify before Congress.
In a letter to the energy secretary, Mr. Comer stated that his staff had reached out to schedule a hearing for oversight of the DOE under her leadership, but Ms. Granholm did not confirm her availability. Despite a formal request for her participation in a hearing on March 27, DOE offered Deputy Secretary David Turk as a substitute, which the Committee found unacceptable.
Mr. Comer called on Ms. Granholm to confirm her testimony before the committee on May 15, warning of compulsory measures if she did not cooperate voluntarily. The lawmaker’s letter followed Ms. Granholm’s appearance on “The View,” where she showcased a “Driving Electric Calculator” without making time to testify before the House Oversight Committee.
Republicans are scrutinizing the decision to halt new liquid natural gas (LNG) exports, among other Biden energy policies. Mr. Comer previously requested details from Ms. Granholm regarding the LNG export pause decision and expressed interest in addressing potential risks at the Department, misuse of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and concerns related to an electric vehicle road trip she participated in. Ms. Granholm’s road trip faced challenges with finding charging stations, including an incident where a DOE employee parked in front of a charging station to reserve it for her EV caravan, prompting a call to the police.
