Living in a communist country brings uncertainty, as one can never be certain who is listening and what consequences speaking out may bring. The question arises: should Canadians have to endure the same fear and anxiety?
Chinese-Canadians, Hong Kongers, Tibetans, Uyghurs, and others who speak out against the oppressive Chinese Communist Party find themselves in a precarious position, even in countries that offer safety and freedom.
It is no secret that those who oppose the CCP often become targets of the regime, even when residing abroad. Examples include Conservative MP Michael Chong, who was the victim of a coordinated disinformation campaign, and NDP’s Jenny Kwan, who faced similar targeting.
The harassment extends beyond politicians to everyday citizens who do not support the CCP. Reports have emerged of individuals filming protesters, making threatening phone calls, and even physical attacks targeting activists.
The track record of communist and socialist regimes in respecting human rights and allowing dissent is dismal, as seen in the atrocities committed by regimes in Russia, Cuba, and Korea. The Chinese regime continues this trend with its surveillance and persecution of citizens.
Chinese Canadians should not have to fear repercussions for exercising their right to free speech in their adopted country.
Efforts to address this issue include creating a registry of foreign agents and investigating CCP links to Chinese-language media in Canada. Raising awareness about the targeting of individuals by the CCP is crucial in highlighting the dangers of socialist ideologies.
SecondStreet.org is collecting stories from those targeted by the CCP to shed light on their experiences and educate Canadians about the threats posed by socialism. Spreading awareness can help prevent similar tragedies from occurring in Canada.
It is essential to take threats like the CCP seriously to prevent Canada from mirroring oppressive regimes of the past and present. Socialism may sound appealing in theory, but history has shown the devastating consequences it can lead to.
