The term Latinx (a gender-neutral construction meant to be more inclusive of nonbinary people of Latin American descent) is gaining popularity. It is being used widely on college campuses, mentioned by Elizabeth Warren in a primary debate, and seeing a surge in searches on Google Trends due to increased awareness from recent protests. Latinx first emerged in 2004 and saw increased usage in the mid-2010s. Pronunciations vary, with latin-eks being the most common. Some have criticized it for deviating from traditional two-gendered Spanish grammar. Other variations include Latine and Latin@, while some activists are promoting Mx. as an alternative to Mr. and Ms. It will be interesting to see how this linguistic change evolves in the future.
