There are already suggestions from the country’s premiers that Canada express its willingness to divide the existing United States-Canada-Mexico free trade agreement into one bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Canada and another between the U.S. and Mexico.
Donald Trump has made it clear he will not tolerate certain practices from Mexico that affect American factories. It is not Canada’s place to comment directly on these matters, but Canada is informally in considerable sympathy with the American position.
The U.S.-Mexico relationship is complicated by various issues, including the open southern border and criminal activity. President Trump has expressed a strong stance on these issues.
To the extent that this is a justified concern, our first priority should be careful about newcomers to this country from overseas. Canada should prioritize anti-terrorist screening without external prompting.
All of this signifies a transition in the economic landscape of North America, with potential benefits for Canada. The economic psychology generated by the pro-growth Trump administration could lead to greater demand for Canadian goods and resources.
Neither Donald Trump nor any other American president since the War of 1812 has had any reason to consider Canada anything but a friendly and compatible neighbor.
We may have our disagreements with the United States at times, but when the country thrives, it ultimately benefits us as well.
There has been talk of increasing Canada’s military spending to 2 percent of GDP, a commitment we have made. Investing in defense is not only stimulating but also crucial for advancing high-technology sectors. Additionally, boosting military personnel numbers provides valuable opportunities for adult education. This aligns with our goal of enhancing Canada’s global influence, a task that has been neglected for too long. The world respects nations with military and economic prowess, not those who pander to dictatorial regimes or seek approval from the ineffective United Nations.
A Trump administration can bring positive outcomes for Canada, particularly by providing strong leadership within the Western Alliance.
