Steve Christou, a Conservative Cumberland councillor and former mayor, recently announced his decision to join the Libertarian Party. He expressed his belief that the Libertarian Party is the only one truly looking out for the nation’s best interests. Christou criticized other major parties for their lack of action and vowed to work with the Libertarian Party to “make Australia great again.”
Known for his opposition to COVID-19 lockdowns in New South Wales, Christou made headlines for leading a motion to remove a controversial book from Cumberland’s libraries. Despite facing protests, the ban was eventually overturned.
Conservative Outlook
Christou’s concerns align with those of Victorian Legislative Council member David Limbrick, who criticized taxpayer funding for programs promoting LGBT activity in libraries. Libertarian MP John Ruddick emphasized the party’s focus on small government and plans to provide a conservative voice in Australian politics.
The Libertarians aim to challenge Teal candidates and establish a presence in various government tiers, advocating for free markets and positioning themselves as a right-wing alternative to the Greens.
