President-elect Donald Trump focused attention on Canada’s porous border with the United States by threatening to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods if the border isn’t controlled. While not as many immigrants and drugs cross from Canada to the USA compared to the Mexican border, the United States still has valid concerns with its northern neighbor. The most troubling export from Canada to the USA is terror suspects.
The processing time for refugee applications by IRCC is alarming with projected wait times of 24 months. If an application is rejected, the average appeal time is 12 months. These delays are unacceptable and unsustainable. Additionally, individuals who manage to enter Canada inappropriately and apply for refugee status can exploit the system for three years before a deportation decision is made.
Canada, as a nation that benefits from immigration for economic growth, should have an efficient immigration processing system. The government must thoroughly examine and reform IRCC to expedite the processing of applications, which currently leave immigrants in limbo for years. This delay not only affects immigrants but also strains national social services and opens the door to abuse through human trafficking and potential infiltration of terrorist individuals into the USA.
For the United States to view Canada as a secure and reliable ally and trading partner, action is required beyond mere attention-grabbing threats of tariffs. Canada must streamline and control its immigration processes and numbers to avoid further tensions with the USA. Failure to do so could result in crippling economic repercussions if tariffs are imposed.
Canada must act promptly to address these challenges.
