A bumbling thief in Colorado carjacked a truck with a sleeping couple inside
In a bizarre turn of events, a thief in Colorado carjacked a truck pulling a camper, unaware that a sleeping couple and their dog were inside. The couple woke up during the joyride and managed to call the police for help.
When the police caught up with the suspect in Boulder after a brief chase, he claimed that he was just “test driving” the stolen vehicle, according to authorities.
The incident occurred when the couple and their dog were asleep in a friend’s camper parked outside her apartment. In the middle of the night, someone broke into the pickup truck attached to the camper and drove off with it.
The couple remained quiet to avoid alerting the thief and called for help, leading the police to locate the vehicle around 3 a.m. The driver initially refused to pull over, but eventually stopped after turning onto a dead-end street.
Bodycam footage from the police shows the suspect, identified as 47-year-old David Bradley Metz, being arrested. He claimed innocence, stating that he was just test driving the truck, despite the owners being in the back.
Fortunately, neither the couple nor their dog were injured during the ordeal, although they were understandably shaken up. The truck and camper did not sustain any damage, according to the police.
The suspect, with a history of motor vehicle theft convictions, was charged with second-degree motor vehicle theft, reckless endangerment, vehicular eluding, carrying a concealed knife, and failure to appear in court for a previous theft case. He has three prior arrests for motor vehicle thefts, including one in Boulder earlier this year.
