The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s approval of a natural gas pipeline running through five states, including Maryland, has been rejected by a federal appeals court. The court ruled that the approval did not adequately consider the increased greenhouse gas emissions the project would generate over the next 50 years. The approval was halted, and the project has been remanded back to the commission for further action. The New Jersey Conservation Foundation, which brought the case, praised the ruling for recognizing the importance of state regulators in ensuring cost-effective and climate-friendly energy solutions. The company responsible for building the pipeline, Williams, stated that they will address the concerns raised by the court and expect the project to proceed without delay, providing access to clean and reliable natural gas for consumers in the Northeast.
