A recent study published in Nature Partner Journals (NPJ) revealed that taking cranberry extract for just four days can lead to a significant improvement in the composition of the gut microbiome. This boost in beneficial microbes and reduction in potentially harmful microbes can help inhibit inflammation, thereby preventing the development of conditions such as gut cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
The study, conducted at Laval University and the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF) in Canada, focused on a cranberry extract product called Prebiocran™. Analysis of the product showed that it is rich in polyphenol antioxidants, particularly flavan-3-ols, as well as oligosaccharides that enhance polyphenol bioactivity.
The beneficial effects of the cranberry extract are believed to be due to the combined action of polyphenols and oligosaccharides. The study involved 28 healthy participants who were given a daily dose of the extract for four days, resulting in improved gut health through probiotic and antimicrobial properties, referred to as “duplibiotic.”
Key Beneficial Ingredients
The study showed that the cranberry extract increased the population of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and butyrate-producing bacteria in the colon. Bifidobacterium is associated with a reduced risk of cardiometabolic diseases, while butyrate-producing bacteria play a crucial role in intestinal function, wound healing, and gut health.
Furthermore, the extract decreased the population of potentially pathogenic bacteria such as Bacteroides in the colon, allowing beneficial bacteria to thrive. The researchers highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced gut microbiome to counteract the harmful effects of the Western diet.
Magnitude of the Benefits
The study described the prebiotic effect of the cranberry extract as “strong,” especially considering the relatively low dose of key ingredients. The rapid improvement in gut health observed after just four days of supplementation is promising for overall wellness.
Dr. Rudolph Bedford of Providence Saint John’s Health Center emphasized the significance of gut health for overall well-being, noting that changes in gut bacteria can impact immune function, hormonal levels, and various physiological processes. Research on the gut microbiome continues to uncover its role in a wide range of diseases, from physical ailments to mental health conditions.
How to Improve Gut Microbiome
In addition to taking supplements like Prebiocran™, maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise are essential for improving gut health. Plant-based diets have been shown to be beneficial for the microbiome, while exercise can enhance microbial diversity and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.
Overall, the study highlights the importance of a balanced gut microbiome in maintaining optimal health and preventing various diseases. By incorporating cranberry extract and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, individuals can support their gut health and overall well-being.
