ATHENS, Greece—Tragedy struck during a yacht race on the Aegean Sea as a French crew member lost her life after falling overboard in strong winds, Greek officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The coast guard reported that the incident occurred late Monday near the eastern island of Kassos, with the victim identified as a 40-year-old woman. Fortunately, a second crew member who also fell into the water was successfully rescued.
Despite efforts to revive her, the crew member with the severe head injury could not be saved. The yacht was part of the international Aegean 600 race that commenced on Sunday.
Due to the harsh weather conditions on Monday, 14 out of the 69 participating yachts had to withdraw from the competition, according to race organizers.
