Crime Rates Drop on East 14th Street Following Stabbing Incident
After a tragic stabbing incident on East 14th Street near Avenue A in June, where a 38-year-old man was killed and two others were seriously injured, there has been a significant decrease in felony crimes on the block. Data provided by Mayor Adams’ office shows a more than 57% reduction in felony crimes on the block following the incident.
During the 28-day period ending on Oct. 13, there were only six incidents reported, compared to 14 incidents during the same period in 2023. Overall in 2024, felony crimes, including murders, burglaries, and felony assaults, have decreased by 12.5% compared to the previous year.
According to the mayor’s office, calls to 911 regarding the area have decreased by nearly 34% compared to the same period in 2023, with 311 calls down by approximately 44%.
Mayor Adams stated, “The undeniable progress on 14th Street demonstrates the proven success of our community-driven, multi-agency approach to quality-of-life and public safety problems.”
Following the stabbing incident, the city initiated a multi-agency operation in August, which included the installation of NYPD daily foot posts on East 14th Street, increased trash pick up, and enhanced homeless outreach efforts.
