In a disturbing incident, the owner of a coffee shop in Washington DC launched into a racist tirade against a Spanish-speaking Uber Eats delivery driver, demanding that he “learn English” and mocking his language.
The video of Canna Coffee owner Greg Harris berating driver Gregorio Amundarain went viral on TikTok, where Harris can be seen shouting at the driver for not knowing English while picking up an order.
Amundarain responded by saying he doesn’t speak English, which only further fueled Harris’ angry outburst. The owner continued to shout racially charged remarks and even grabbed the driver’s phone, which he was using for deliveries.
As the situation escalated, Harris mocked Amundarain’s Spanish-speaking abilities and aggressively demanded that he learn English. The video, which has garnered nearly 20 million views, shows Harris slamming the food order into the driver’s chest before the driver eventually left the establishment.
Amundarain, who moved to the US from Venezuela for a better life, spoke out about the disrespectful treatment he received from Harris. He filed a report with the DC police department, leading to an investigation into the incident as a potential hate crime and simple assault.
Following the backlash, Uber banned Canna Coffee from its platform and expressed disgust at the behavior exhibited in the video. The company stated that hate has no place on its platform and that they are working to ensure the well-being of the driver.
Additionally, DC Health found that Canna Coffee was illegally operating when the incident occurred and shut down the shop due to several violations. The Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection had also been investigating the business for months prior to the incident.
Harris and his lawyer plan to hold a news conference to address the situation. The authorities are continuing to investigate the matter, and further updates are awaited.
