Pete Hegseth has been engaging with GOP senators this week on Capitol Hill to garner support for his nomination as defense secretary by President-elect Donald Trump.
Hegseth met with lawmakers in private on Monday and Tuesday as part of the confirmation process.
The decorated Army National Guard veteran and former Fox News host is currently facing multiple misconduct allegations.
“Pete Hegseth has the qualities needed to inspire soldiers to commit to the mission and reverse the recruitment decline,” Tuberville wrote on X.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) described him as an “excellent choice” for the position.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) stated that Hegseth is determined to eliminate the influence of “wokeness” in the armed forces after their meeting on Monday.
However, Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), a member of the Armed Services Committee, recently expressed reservations about sexual assault allegations against Hegseth in 2017.
Cramer also acknowledged the necessity of the confirmation process.
“This is why background checks, hearings, and scrutiny are essential. I won’t judge prematurely, but these are serious allegations,” he said.
Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni stated that her office chose not to press charges due to insufficient evidence, a point Hegseth reiterated to reporters.
“The incident was thoroughly investigated, and I was completely cleared,” Hegseth told the media on Capitol Hill last month.
The nominee for defense secretary also faces anonymous allegations about being intoxicated multiple times while serving as CEO of Concerned Veterans for America.
He also mentioned that senators will continue to meet with Hegseth as part of the confirmation process.
“The Senate takes this seriously by conducting one-on-one meetings, confirmation hearings, and giving senators the opportunity to ask questions and address concerns,” Miller stated.
