Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and 22 Democratic senators, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, are calling on the Department of Justice to investigate allegations of price-fixing in the oil and gas industry. They believe that collusion among oil and gas companies has led to higher fuel costs, impacting inflation in the U.S. economy. The senators claim that this collusion may have caused a significant decline in domestic crude production growth and resulted in increased fuel costs for American households. They also reference the FTC’s allegations regarding the Exxon-Pioneer merger, suggesting that U.S. oil executives may have worked with OPEC to artificially boost oil prices.
The senators are demanding that the DOJ take action to protect consumers and ensure fair competition in the petroleum market. They argue that if the oil and gas sector is found to have engaged in illegal practices, they should be held accountable and provide restitution to consumers. The letter sent to the DOJ also mentions the recent acquisition of Marathon Oil by ConocoPhillips, highlighting ongoing concerns about the energy sector’s practices.
The current administration has been critical of the oil and gas industry, accusing them of taking advantage of crises and inflation to raise prices. President Biden has warned energy companies against price-gouging and threatened to implement a windfall tax if necessary. The administration and some Democrats have called for investigations into the oil industry’s alleged disinformation campaigns, drawing parallels to the tactics used by Big Tobacco.
In response, the American Petroleum Institute has defended the industry, urging Congress to focus on energy solutions rather than political rhetoric. The API maintains that petroleum prices are influenced by market forces and advocates for policies that meet the nation’s energy needs. The organization rejects claims of individual company manipulation of prices and emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to energy policy. The White House responded by creating a joint task force between the FTC and DOJ to investigate unfair and illegal pricing practices across various products and services. This decision was made after government data revealed that inflation in Washington had stagnated in the initial months of 2024, with the annual consumer price index staying above 3 percent.
