The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association is criticizing the Liberal government for what they perceive as a double standard in the payment of services under a new federal plan.
Last week, Health Canada unveiled the reimbursement guide for the upcoming federal dental-care plan, aimed at offering oral health coverage to millions of low- and middle-income families.
The guides indicate that the federal government intends to compensate significantly less for a cleaning performed at a private hygiene clinic compared to one done at a dentist’s office.
Donna Wells, the association’s manager of professional practice, highlights that in certain provinces, the difference exceeds 20 per cent.
The association brought up the issue with Health Canada weeks ago, expressing surprise at the persistence of the discrepancy in the recently released guides.
Health Canada has not responded immediately to a request for comment, although the minister has previously mentioned that the program will develop over time.
