Former Vice President Dick Cheney announced his endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election.
Cheney, who served as Republican vice president under the George W. Bush administration and is the father of former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), emphasized the importance of prioritizing country over partisanship in a statement. He stated, “That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
In his statement, Cheney criticized Trump for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, echoing sentiments he expressed in 2022 when endorsing his daughter in her unsuccessful House reelection bid.
Cheney’s endorsement came shortly after Liz Cheney announced her support for Harris. During her final term in office, Liz Cheney led the House investigation into Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, Capitol protest.
The Harris campaign welcomed the endorsement from the former vice president.
Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’s campaign chair, issued a statement expressing appreciation for Vice President Cheney’s support and commending his commitment to prioritizing the country over party.
Dick Cheney, now 83, has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years due to health issues, including heart problems that led to a heart transplant in 2012.
Trump asserted, “I am the Peace President, and only I will stop World War III!” in his statement, highlighting his administration’s pardon of a former Bush adviser that Cheney was unable to secure.
Convicted in 2007 as part of an investigation related to the leak of a CIA officer’s identity, Scooter Libby was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Trump granted him a full pardon in 2018, stating that he hoped the pardon would help rectify a sad chapter in Libby’s life.
The Trump campaign confirmed that Kennedy and Gabbard would join his transition team in August.
Former President George W. Bush recently indicated that he will not endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential election. A spokesperson for the Bush family stated that neither George W. Bush nor his wife, Laura, will publicly disclose their voting intentions or make endorsements.
Former Democratic Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Jimmy Carter have all endorsed Harris, with President Biden also throwing his support behind her after announcing he would not seek reelection.
Former Vice President Mike Pence has indicated in multiple interviews that he will not be voting for Trump, his former boss.
