During a speech at an evangelical event, former President Donald J. Trump made controversial comments suggesting the creation of a sports league for migrants to compete against each other. He described migrants using dehumanizing language, calling them “tough,” coming from prisons, and being “nasty” and “mean.”
Trump mentioned proposing the idea to Dana White, CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (U.F.C.), to establish a league for migrant fighters. He speculated that the champion of such a league could potentially defeat the U.F.C. champion due to the toughness of migrant fighters.
Although Mr. White did not show enthusiasm for the concept, Trump defended his idea by emphasizing the resilience of migrants. White later clarified that Trump’s proposal was made in jest and should not be taken seriously.
The Biden campaign criticized Trump’s remarks, labeling them as a “rambling, confused tirade” at an event focused on Christian values. A campaign spokesperson expressed concern over Trump’s rhetoric, characterizing him as a threat to freedom and unfit for the presidency.
