During an address to an evangelical group, former President Donald J. Trump made controversial comments suggesting the creation of a sports league for migrants to compete against each other.
Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s conference in Washington, Mr. Trump used dehumanizing language to describe migrants, calling them “tough,” “come from prisons,” and “nasty, mean.”
He went on to mention that he had proposed the idea of a migrant fighting league to Dana White, the chief executive of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (U.F.C.), suggesting that the league’s champion could face off against the champion of the migrants.
While Mr. White did not favor the idea, Mr. Trump defended it, emphasizing the toughness of the migrant population.
In response to Mr. Trump’s comments, the Biden campaign criticized his remarks as a “rambling, confused tirade” that was inappropriate for a conference focused on Christian values.
Mr. Trump’s immigration policies and rhetoric have been a significant part of his platform, with promises to conduct raids, build detention camps, and use military funds for enforcement. His inflammatory language towards migrants has drawn criticism and condemnation.
Critics argue that Mr. Trump’s focus on extreme measures like cage matches distracts from the serious implications of his immigration policies and the impact they could have on the economy and society.
