PATNA, India—A tragic incident occurred during a three-day Hindu festival in Bihar state, India, where dozens of children drowned while participating in rituals involving bathing in rivers and ponds, officials reported.
The heavy monsoon rains had caused water levels to rise significantly across the state, leading to multiple drowning incidents in 15 districts. A total of 46 individuals, including 37 children, lost their lives. As of now, 43 bodies have been recovered, with the remaining three individuals presumed dead.
During the festival, mothers observe a 24-hour fast for the well-being of their children. Some mothers bring their children along for cleansing rituals at rivers and ponds. The festival concluded on Thursday.
The state government has announced compensation of 400,000 rupees ($4,784) for the families of each deceased individual.
Tragic accidents like drownings and stampedes are unfortunately common during religious festivals in India.
In July, a tragic stampede at a religious festival in northern India resulted in the deaths of at least 121 individuals due to severe overcrowding and inadequate exits.
