A truck driver, Timothy Murray, 64, of Mastic, crashed his 18-wheeler into a guardrail on the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills on Monday night. The 2016 Freightliner tractor he was driving veered off the right shoulder, colliding with the guardrail and two lamp poles before coming to a stop east of the Exit 50 off-ramp around 7:45 p.m.
The crash left behind crushed guardrail and two downed street lamps, causing another vehicle to become disabled as it passed over the debris on the roadway. Two lanes of the westbound expressway were closed for over six hours to allow first responders to clear the vehicles and clean up approximately 50 gallons of spilled diesel fuel.
Murray was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.
