A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck the Tonga region, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time and was followed by two aftershocks. The first aftershock, measuring 6.1, occurred a minute later, followed by another aftershock with a strength of 5.3 seven minutes later.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 21 kilometers south-south-east of Pangai at a depth of 131 kilometers.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System has stated that no tsunami is expected as a result of the earthquake.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of damages caused by the earthquake.
Witnesses on social media described the earthquake as a “quite a sharp jolt” that lasted for some time.
The earthquake occurred while Pacific leaders were gathered in Tonga for the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum. Despite the earthquake, the event has not been disrupted.
