Emotional Alberta Premier Says a Third to Half of Jasper Structures Destroyed by Wildfire

Reports indicate that a devastating wildfire has destroyed between 30 to 50 percent of the buildings in Jasper overnight, as stated by Alberta’s premier.

Premier Danielle Smith delivered a heartfelt update to the press on July 25, revealing, “We’re seeing potentially 30 to 50 percent structural damage,” during a news conference.

Expressing deep sorrow for the damage inflicted on Jasper, Ms. Smith emphasized the town’s significance as a provincial gem.

“We share the sense of loss with all of those who live in the town, who care for it, and who have helped build it. Jasper, we will continue to stand by you as everyone works to get their feet back under them,” she added.

During the conference, the premier was visibly emotional, prompting a staff member to provide her with tissues.

Describing the overnight situation as “extremely volatile,” Ms. Smith assured that the province would assist those who have been displaced.

“Alberta’s government will provide the necessary support to families and the community for recovery and rebuilding, ensuring a stronger future for generations to come and preserving the unique essence of this community,” she stated.

Extent of Damage

Social media images and videos depict extensive damage to homes and vehicles in Jasper, with structures reduced to ashes.

Pierre Martel, director of the National Fire Management program at Parks Canada, mentioned that structural firefighters are still working on-site to salvage what they can.

Parks Canada highlighted the need for an accurate assessment of the damage before providing specifics on the lost structures, emphasizing ongoing efforts to contain the wildfire.

“Jasper National Park received a small amount of rain overnight,” stated Parks Canada in a release. “While the rain helped reduce fire activity slightly, it is not enough to have made a meaningful impact on the overall wildfire situation, which remains out of control.”

The wildfire encroached upon town limits around 6 p.m. local time on July 24.

“As of now, the wildfire remains uncontrollable, and crews are operating in hazardous conditions to safeguard critical infrastructure in the town,” she mentioned.

The province has mobilized fire crews and support from 32 municipalities across the region, in addition to seeking assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Furthermore, international aid has been received, with firefighters from Australia, Mexico, and South Africa joining efforts to combat the wildfire, as per Alberta Wildfire officials at the press conference.
