On May 1, fifteen pro-Palestine protestors were arrested at Fordham University in Manhattan, while the encampment at New York University has become rowdy.
The following day, Fordham University was free of protestors after the arrests, but the situation at New York University’s encampment remains tense.
“We urge the protesters to pick up their belongings and leave,” NYU spokesperson John Beckman stated.
Despite arrests at various universities in New York City, including City University of New York (CUNY), Fordham University, NYU, and Columbia University, unsightly encampments have persisted since April.
At Fordham University, 15 individuals were arrested on May 1 and subsequently released with summonses according to an NYPD spokesperson.
At City College of New York (CCNY), 173 were arrested on April 30, while 109 were arrested at Columbia University where students and outside activists broke windows and doors to gain entry to Hamilton Hall.
The encampment at Hamilton Hall included individuals from various backgrounds, including outsiders, students from unaffiliated schools, Columbia undergraduates, graduates, and employees.
Classes and campus activities continue at NYU despite approximately 100 protesters camping in tents at the Greene St. Walkway near the Paulsen Center.
On Instagram, protestors posted a ‘supply call’ requesting donations of various items to be dropped off at 98 Bleecker Street.
‘Like to See a Zero-Tolerance Policy’
Yossi Hertz, a spectator observing the protests at the Greene St. Walkway, expressed support for a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination and intimidation of students.
On May 1, around 500 demonstrators broke off from a larger May Day crowd to protest at the Greene St. Walkway, resulting in noise, disruption, vandalism, and reports of violence.
Visitors like Dave Thomas showed support for the protestors at the NYU encampment, emphasizing the need for alternative use of funds sent abroad for military purposes.
Despite ongoing concerns about safety and adherence to university rules, the encampment at NYU continues to draw protesters from across the city.
