THE HAGUE, Netherlands—A tragic explosion and fire shook a neighborhood in The Hague, Netherlands on Saturday, resulting in the loss of three lives, injuries to several others, and the destruction of multiple apartments, as reported by authorities.
The cause of the incident remains unknown at this time. Mayor Jan van Zanen stated that investigators are exploring all possible explanations. Police are actively searching for a car that was observed leaving the scene to aid in the investigation.
Van Zanen confirmed that three bodies were recovered from the rubble, while emergency responders rescued four individuals who were subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment. The mayor mentioned that the focus has shifted from rescue operations to recovery efforts due to the slim chances of finding survivors under the remains of the apartments. The exact number of individuals who may still be unaccounted for is uncertain.
Residents in the Mariahoeve neighborhood in The Hague were startled by a loud explosion and cries for help in the early hours of the morning. One eyewitness likened the experience to an earthquake.
Dutch authorities dispatched a specialized urban search and rescue team equipped with four search dogs trained to locate individuals in distress. This team had previously been involved in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in Turkey back in 2023.
Following the blast, a line of ambulances stood ready nearby in anticipation of additional casualties. The local hospital spokesperson confirmed their readiness to treat any injuries that may arise.
The mayor described it as a “very somber day.”
“I was not expecting this kind of Saturday,” van Zanen remarked at a press briefing.
Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed shock at the devastation captured in images of the incident. “My heart goes out to the victims, all those affected, and the first responders currently engaged at the site,” he stated.
The Dutch royal family echoed similar sentiments. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima conveyed their concerns for those impacted by the explosion and fire in The Hague, including individuals awaiting news about their loved ones.
